planta-tion model.

The origin of Indian coffee goes back to the 17th. Century when a pilgrim smuggled seven coffee
seeds from Yemen, on his way back to India from Mecca.

Introduced in the mid 18th. Century, coffee became an important crop a century later
supplanting indigo as the most important cash crop.

Colombia

Colombia

First introduced in the early 18th. Century by Jes-uits, coffee production grew until by early in the 20th. Century coffee production comprised ap-proximately 50% of exports.

Brazil

Brazil

Brazil is the world’s largest coffee pro-ducer and has been for over 150 years. Over one third of the world coffee is grown in Brazil.
